Ceilings that were renovated in the 16th century and inlaid with gold from Christopher Columbus from America soar over the patrons that visit the Basilica, the largest of 26 dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Rome. The largest bell tower in Rome rises from the church, one of the four papal churches in the Italian capital, and inside, the body of the talented Italian sculpture and architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini rests for eternity.
The Basilica was created in the shape of snowbanks in the square, after a miraculous snowfall, on the site of a pagan temple, dedicated to the Greek goddess Cybele. In Rome, Cybele was known as the "Great Mother" (or Magna Mater), and for a time, cults dedicated to following her spread throughout the Roman empire.
More than one of the four largest Papal churches in Rome, and much more than a tribute to the Virgin Mary, the Basilica is home to a kneeling and praying statue of Pope Pius IX, pieces of Jesus' original wooden crib, and the oldest known representation of the Virgin Mary.
